&* Shen Zhou followed his family in his studies as a child, becoming gifted at poetry, prose, calligraphy, and painting as well as one of the Four Ming Masters. This scroll depicts a horse-and-cart scene of figures in a landscape. This work bears no seal or signature of the artist, but the use of brush and ink differs from Shen Zhou’s. Xiang Yuanbian’s record at the end says, “A painting by Shen Shitian (Zhou) of Huaji by Han Wengong (Yu). Calligraphy by Wen Hengshan (Zhengming). Authenticated by Molin, Xiang Yuanbian. Mounted in the 3rd month of the Jiajing 31st year (1552). Xing 幸.” This is Xiang’s accession number from the “Thousand Character Classic” (the 719th). Wen Zhengming’s date (1558) in the middle, however, conflicts with Xiang’s.
